I was exploring the SP state coastal regions ..
A lovely region is Caraguatatuba ca 175 miles NW of SP
There is a mountain range all the way parallel to the coast ( "a Serra") so if you are thinking of tsunamis and such, you can settle on one of those, that should be pretty safe.

Answering your question, I do agriculture on a small scale.

I have an eight acre (4 hectares) small farm where I breed goats, ducks and plant corn, broadbeans and 'Carioca' beans. Also there are cashew, mango, olive, acerola, seriguela, pitomba and pitanga trees that give fruit at their respective times of year.

I only go there over the weekends and public holidays and employ (one contracted) two people to do the day-to-day stuff so that I can just potter around when I get there.

It's on the top of a hill, so floods and avalanches are not a great problem. However, volcanos......

Sounds like you are set up well. It seems likely that you will get to spend a lot more time there in the future.

So the olive trees do well in your tropical climate? I've been wondering about that. Seems like an excellent long-term investment to plant an olive orchard. Another idea I've been wanting to implement is to bring in a lot of open-pollinated seeds from sources in the US. I don't know about Brazil, but Venezuela has very little diversity in vegetable seeds. I have only seen three types of tomatoes and one type of corn (maize).

It would be nice if this forum featured the ability to flag someone to a post, let them know you were replying to them, rather than leaving it to chance that they might have subscribed to the thread or might go back and check at some point. I don't see any way it can fulfill its potential without that.

Hi Starskipper, greetings

I am from Santos by the shore, very near Sap Paulo and I am very familiar around the region, on top of the SERRA, before reaching the road down the hills we can find a place called Salesopolis where has a dam, the range medium highs are about 4000ft, it is an option but even near big cities can be easily isolated in the worst case scenario.
I have reasons to believe that SP country side along the Tiete river far from Sao Paulo is a good choice, far from the shore, good land and water and that region goes from 1800ft to 3000ft above sea level, mild temperatures, and few mountains along four big dams.
That is my target area so far.

Hello you guys...I am from Brazil as well and like I said to Steve before is great to see that are brazilians doing their bit. There are simpler comunities like the ones in sites like orkut etc. I know is not in deep details like this forum but is a good place to sow the seeds of love.
