The Thing-john carpenter

In the midst of the Antartican snowfield, the scientists and workers of a small American research base are shocked when a helicopter begins to circle their camp, chasing and shooting at a dog. When the helicopter is destroyed and the passenger's are killed by accident, the dog is let into the base and the American's begin to wonder what has actually happened. The helicopter is discovered to be of Norweigan make, and probably linked to the Norweigan base not too far from their own. Helicopter pilot J.R MacReady offers to travel to the Norweigan base and find out what has happened. On arrival, he finds that the place has been totally destroyed. He also discovers a mangled body that looks as though it was once that of a person, which he brings back with him to study. It is only then that the clues begin to add up; the dog morphs horribly into a strange creature that attacks the researchers. They manage to fight it off, but the base's doctor has come to a conclusion: an alien with the power to transform and take the appearance of anybody else is amongst them. Who is infected already, and who can be trusted? J.R MacReady sets out to find the answers to exactly that.

ahh, my all-time favorite film. brilliant score by ennio morricone which is terribly underrated. its the absolute scariest movie music ever. i have to have seen it over 200 times. its a seasonal film for me... when it gets cold enough, i start watching that.

have you ever seen the 1982 film 'parasite'? its apocalyptic as well... the story is decent, but the character development is absolutely fantastic. the details in the film are outstanding (gas at 35 bucks/gallon but the gas station only takes silver pieces for trade since fiat currency is worthless, the only food left is some canned food, the government controls the cities...)

the parasite concept is dumb, but watch it for the wonderful, three dimensional characters.

also in the 70s/80s apocalyptic vein, if youre into it (romero aside):

- threads (UK film- enjoyed)
- testament (pretty good)
- the day after (made for TV, but dont let that dissuade you-- its definitely good)
- a boy and his dog (not a favorite)
- day of the triffids (UK series-- enjoyed it... another 80s classic)
- glen and randa (not so good)
- the quiet earth (very good!)

Don't forget 'They Live' another Carpenter classic that has many themes that resonate currently as well as Rowdy Roddy Piper!

The Thing is an excellent movie too.

one of my FAVES, i LOVE this flick, kurt russell is great and its maybe the best john carpenter movie (starman, they live and halloween aint bad either)

im buying this on bluray for my 50 inch plasma! woo!

It's been one of my all time favorite movies ever since I saw it. The first time I saw that movie it left a very deep impression on my psyche. It' s an intense movie. I could only imagine what it must have been like for anyone seeing that at the theatre when it was released. That must have blowen a few minds. That scene when they are strapped to the chairs getting their blood tested has to be one of the all time great tension building scenes in horror movie history.

Did you know that this was based off an older move from the 50's titled The Thing? As much as I love old movies I have a feeling it would pale in comparison. John Carpenter could do no wrong in the 80's!

the original film was closer to the book, "who goes there?" by joseph cambell. the music score doubles the kick-assness of this movie, so theres no way that the 50s film can compare. by the way--the film 'prince of darkness' by carpenter also has an amazing score. film is pretty good... score is excellent.

i also read that they were considering a remake <eyeroll>. theres a video game out (i stopped playing video games after atari 2600 and nintendo 8 bit), if anyone is interested. its supposed to be okay. not great.

theres also a trip scheduled to go up and camp out in stewart, BC next august at the very same site where the movie was filmed.

There's another very creepy film...similar theme in an urban setting...where a demonic being jumps from person to person with just a touch, as in brushing against someone on the street. Very, very creepy. I can't remember the name of that one. Anyone know which one I mean?

The movie was Fallen with Denzel Washington as the detective who tries to track it down. It was a movie that didn't get that much hype but it sure sent a shiver down my spine.

Yeah A great fim prince of darkness-very sinister-the atmosphere of science and dark spirituality is quite disturbing when you have an innocence about you.
