Hello everyone, I am interested in forming an emergency community or group with like minded individuals. This is a good place to exchange ideas and even setup a meeting location in the event things do get bad.
Please remember that this is a public forum and personal information should only be used in outside channels i.e. email, phone, PM. 1. Wait and see how many we are. 2. Discuss here what are the priorities (safe location, food, water, energy, etc) Also, once we have a location to go, we will should report it to the Avalon Communities Map ( http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/showthread.php?t=549 ) 3. Share information on priorities so each can start preparations. Last edited by David; 09-08-2008 at 02:14 PM. |

Argh ... where were you when I was trying to establish a New Paradigm Meetup group in Colonial Beach!? (That's a rhetorical question ...)
Ah well - it's good to see so many replies from the area. Y'all have restored my faith in the Commonwealth! Unfortunately, I'm packing my things for a move back to Tennessee. So I guess you'll just have to count me amongst the former area residents wishing you all the best! |

Thanks David.
It's a good thread you've got going here, with practical information & recommendations! Water, food & shelter ... in that order. Here's another, offered semi-lightheartedly ... I heard it said once that, while there is so much emphasis on gold & silver as universal currency - the really valuable commodity, should all hell break loose - will surely be: toilet paper! The wife & I are headed to my childhood home just outside of Nashville. We both have a fair amount of family & friends there. I expect we'll be spending some time in Chattanooga once our daughter & grandkids move there sometime next year! |

Welcome Fuglybugger & Adarajones!
![]() Disasters can come in several forms; however, our basic human needs are the same always. With unstable weather conditions, unstable economy, society, and most everything else, it only makes sense to me to have a well-organized disaster ‘kit’ of appropriate size for your own family plus a couple more individuals and your pets. This kit should last you in my opinion for at least 2 weeks until you can stabilize your living situation. 1. My first goal I think for everyone should establish their own emergency kit. After the emergency kit we will need a meeting place in the event of an emergency. This is only a draft so please add comments or ideas. This 100 item essential list looks a little daunting to me so choose what you think may be appropriate and economically feasible. http://www.projectavalon.net/100_essential_items.pdf 1750 page do-it-yourself Free Energy manual http://projectavalon.net/Patrick_Kel...ergy_Guide.pdf Solar Energy Solar panels, chargers and accessories. ( not everyone can afford these expensive items so acquire what is vital like water and food if you are unable) http://www.siliconsolar.com 1) RV Solar Panel Kits- RV-419 (With 12V 7 amp charge controller) (2) 12 Volt Fluorescent Light 7 Watts (1) 400 Watt Power Inverter (2) 12 volt car batteries or preferably deep discharge batteries. If you don't have deep discharge batteries, then you will also need a battery monitor so you will not drain the batteries past 10.2V or else you could damage them. First thing is first. Water Filter -- a Doulton or Berkey, etc. Might want to consider a portable as well as a home filter. I have a generator that I'm converting to GEET... a Bedini SSG battery charger, plenty of candles and some canned foods to wait out a storm. If things get too tough at home, my focus is on higher ground away from population centers. I have a few ideas around the SNP, possibly through the Appalachian trail system. I keep a map of the area in my "go bag."
Any thoughts? |

Welcome Providence!
![]() Fuglybugger, did I miss the most important thing? Water? ![]() 1. Rain water or other water supply. 2. Carbon: Burned wood "charcoal" from a fire. 3. If you don't have chlorine then you can boil the water after the filter. ![]() ![]() ![]() I keep trying to come up with a place to go and I think your absolutely right. The Appalachian trail system is an ideal place to go in an emergency like this. ![]() http://www.nationalgeographic.com/tr...-4-0-appsm.jpg Last edited by David; 09-08-2008 at 04:45 PM. |

This construction will work, but it is pretty high tech on the bucket end (plastic, made from petroleum). This type of thing will also work with unglazed clay pots stacked 3 high, holes in the bottoms plugged. There is plenty of clay around almost everything. If you can't get buckets, you can make clay pots of your own and pit-fire them to sufficient hardness to use. Just keep in mind that plastic will crack or develop holes if you're not careful, then what do you do? It can be mended with high heat and more plastic to use as a filler, but clay is almost everywhere. |

David and others,
I am willing to offer my place as a way-stop if people feel they need to get to the mountains. I am west of Roanoke but not in the highlands. Further info would have to be exchanged by private email, not through this forum. Any are welcome if they are headed elsewhere. I have only a very small patch of land (1/4 acre) out in the country, and a very tiny house (think hobbit house). Any passing through would have to think in terms of camping on the land (there is a fire pit), and it would be good if you had your own food and drinking water, although I wlll share what I have as best I can. I have only small stores of food and water. Access to the Appalachian Trail is located near here, but a little further East, from Catawba Mountain. So... consider this an offer of a stayover at a wayside inn, if you come quietly and respectfully here and can accept the conditions as they exist. I am searching for my own Radiant Zone, and there may be some potentials around this area, but I do not have enough land to consider it. namaste! |

doodah,
That is very kind of you. Traveling in times of crisis can become dangerous and wearying. A friendly way-stop is enough to raise anyone's spirit. Thank you, David |

Welcome RubyTuesday.
![]() R.Z., I hope your move goes smoothly and good luck! I know what you mean about currency. Not sure really what to do about that. On one hand, I would like to purchase gold but that does get rather expensive. I may get a couple ounces just in case. I don't smoke but a carton of cigarettes could also be a good bargaining chip. |

Hanging in there, not sure whether to go salmon fishing next week or cut fire wood for the winter. Tough decision.
