Earthships, Taos, NM

Sustainability is an attempt to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments now and into the indefinite future or the ability for the needs of the world’s current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves. Earthship is one of many things that accomplishes the sustainability . Earthship are autonmous buildings designed to reduce our impact on the planet and increase our connection to it by using the sun’s energy and the thermal mass of their walls for heating and cooling , generating their own electricity from the sun , harvesting their own water from rain and snow melt , dealing directly with their own waste , using discarded tyres and other wastes for wall construction , using materials with low embodied carbon and being buildable by most people at relatively low cost .

Renewable Energy Program
http://www.sanjuancollege.edu/pages/4003.asp
The Renewable Energy Program gives the student a solid foundation in the fundamental design/installation techniques required to work with renewable technologies. The concentration in Photovoltaic System Design and Installation is offered as an A.A.S. degree and or a one-year certificate. Both avenues include hands-on electrical training in our modern computer-based laboratory setting where the National Electrical Code (NEC) is emphasized throughout curriculum.

While the current concentration focuses on photovoltaics, RENG 210 - Renewable Energy Applications covers passive and active solar thermal, wind, microhydro, and hydrogen fuel cell applications in some detail. Additionally, for those enrolled in the 2-year degree, a philosophical course in RENG 270 - Sustainable Development discusses many of the non-technical advantages to energy systems based on renewable resources.
