What is the differences between a republic and a democracy?

Greeting's to all,
I've always wondered why, most U.S. president's and congressional leader's want to spread "democracy," all around the world? Especially, since the U.S. is a republic, and the majority does not necessarily rule. Who knows the differences between a republic and a democracy? Is a democracy, the only true way for a people to govern themselves? giovonni

Democracy is 3 wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.

Darn, I just forgot who said that...one of the founders I think...

In a democracy, everyone votes/has a say in legislation.

In a republic, people vote for representatives to do that work for them.

One steals the bread, and the other steals the butter off your plate.

They are both still ruled by the British Monarchy them anyway.
