This is indeed, an horrific form of controlling "pests" and as the term is used, there will be unfortunate "collateral damage"

1080 poisoning is a slow, extemely horrific form of death, period.

NZ has an enormous problem trying to control Possums, (100's millions) Rabbits,(100's of millions) Stoats, Ferrits ect, most intoduced from the colonialist, England.

They devastate the natural enviroment and all its creatures, and are losing it at an alarming rate.

It is a huge problem and there have been many options looked at, as to how to control this destruction. 1080 won the day. I do not have the answers, but 1080 is not it!

New Zealand has prided itself over the last 20 yrs as a Green Clean Enviromentally Aware Country, Anti Nuclear stance, pristine images of natural enviroment. However:

NZ main earner is export of agriculture, namely the Dairy Industry. Dairy farms are a major source of pollution. The North Island is nearly all farmed and big chunks of the South. The natural bush/forest's are almost gone with only a few pockets remaining. Yes, the farms look lovely, green and abundent BUT, underlying the surface is serious contamination.

It saddens me to think, that the majority populace have bought into this green clean image and "think" they live in "god's zone" as some put it, partly due to its pristine green clean image, but thats all it is...an image, not reality!

For the record: I am New Zealand born, lived there for 42 yrs.

Thankyou PEACE, for bringing this thread to the forum and raising awareness.

Peace always.

Thank YOU jross for adding that insightful information...

and mntruthseeker for adding the video to your facebook.

Our local river is slowly dying and not expected to survive another 10 years.

Enuf IS Enuf...the whole planet needs to be neutralized.

Lake Taupo, central north Is of NZ flows to form the Waikato River. When it leaves the lake it is a beautiful blue pristine colour...a few Km's up the road and it turns to a brown icky colour as it passes by farms and timber treatment plants...very sad to see

Peace always

A Farmer in the Nelson region has coverted his "dry stock" farm (sheep n cattle) 600 acres, back to NZ native trees, he sells his Oxygen (cubic) to a Japanese company to off-set there Co2 emissions.

He says he earns the same annually as stock farming...Neighbours thought he was bonkers but now seems they are following suit

Peace always

jross, please don't class all dairy farmers in the same mold. There is a huge movement in New Zealand away from conventional farming into biological farming which uses virtually no nitrogen and does not pollute the soil or waterways. Forty percent of dairy farmers in the Hawkes Bay are now farming this way. In my own area of North Otago the system is growing every year. On my own farm and on many others trees are planted on an annual basis. I do realize that there are many dirty farmers, but there are a majority who have always farmed well and look after the land. Unfortunately its the dirty farmers who the press emphasise. The worst polluters and the hardest on land, animals and people are the corporate farmers to whom the bottom line of profit is all that matters. My own family believe that the best and most profitable farms are family farms with smaller herds. Best on land, best on stock and best farmer/staff relationships.

BTW I agree with the banning of 1080, its a ghastly poison and the reason for the deaths of so much birdlife in our native bush. For all that the introduced possum also depletes birdlife by eating the eggs. They were caught on video doing this. Previous to that it was thought that they did not eat eggs!!!

Cheers

Agreed Carmen,

Many Farmers have, and are changing their ways. This is extremely positive to see. Sadly many have yet to pick up the ball.

I worked on 16 different Dairy farms in my earlier years as a relief milker, in the Waikato area. I experienced their enviromental management. The contamination is still very evident today.

Also the amount of dairy farms from my day to the present have increased their herd numbers from an average of 180-200 cows to 600-1200 head.

Southland, as you will be aware, grew dramatically in terms of Dairy farming. Large herds, rushed management, big pollution.

My point was, really to show that our country is not the green clean image it makes out...sadly.

Peace always.

These protests have just gone n been this weekend:

Poison Free New Zealand’s Nationwide Protest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday 13th November 2009

Poison Free New Zealand’s

Nationwide Protest Day

Sunday 15 November – 2 pm

Poison Free New Zealand have organized sixteen nationwide rallies from Great Barrier to Te Anau to protest against the continuous, indiscriminate aerial dropping of the poisons 1080 and Brodifacoum on our so-called 100% Pure Clean Green Country. For more information see the website www.enufisenuf.co.nz.

Yesterday, the Green Party released their policy on the use of aerial poisoning

“The unique natural environment of Aotearoa is precious. We must effectively control the pests that threaten our forests, but 1080 poison should be a measure of last resort”.

Thomas Greve, Nationwide Protest Coordinator of Poison Free New Zealand says “Their policy and the timing of it, shows support for our stand and objective. We share these views, however we ask for a complete ban of ALL aerially dropped poisons, because it is possible to control pests on all types of terrain using alternative methods.”

Peter Dunne has also made a statement: “The Poison Free New Zealand campaign and upcoming nationwide protest has my full support. UnitedFuture is opposed to the aerial application of 1080 and brodifacoum due to the untargeted and indiscriminate killing power of those poisons applied in such a haphazard fashion. I believe aerial poisoning operations present an unacceptable danger to not only non-target indigenous wildlife but also to communities in close proximity to the drop zones. I fully endorse the opinion of the Enuf is Enuf Team that groundbaiting is a more effective and far safer alternative.”

Mr Greve says “We have brought together health-focused, animal rights and environmental groups throughout the country to push for an immediate ban on the aerial dropping of poisons in favour of existing alternatives, creation of fur industries and research into healthy and more humane options”.

The recent release of the Graf brothers’ documentary “Poisoning Paradise” shows instances of how these aerially dropped poisons can enter the food chain thus affecting the overall wellbeing of our country, its people and wildlife. The continued use of the aerial application of these poisons will have devastating consequences on the land and marine based environment and sustainability of our native wildlife populations. This is of concern not only to rural communities but also coastal areas, affecting all New Zealanders.

Great report Barron,

Thank you.

Ground baiting is a far better alternative, but, 1080 in general is still not the answer, I dont know what is???

Peace always

Identify the pest as a resource instead of a pest. Possum fur is very valuable mixed with merino wool to make lovely warm garments. Make it a requirement that hunters are registered and bring numbers of possums down to a certain level in exchange for pelt harvesting. Some areas possoms should be exterminated completely. This hunting activity, whilst difficult in some instances is quite an attractive employment to many young people who enjoy an outdoor life.

Rabbit is also a serious pest in New Zealand. This could also be treated as a resource. The meat is very edible and the pelts make lovely warm garments.

Cheers
