Arrow Communities Print their Own Currency to KEEP CASH FLOWING

Communities Print their Own Currency to KEEP CASH FLOWING

During the Depression, local governments, businesses and individuals issued currency, known as scrip, to keep commerce flowing when bank closings led to a cash shortage.

By Marisol Bello, USA TODAY

A small but growing number of cash-strapped communities are printing their own money.
Borrowing from a Depression-era idea, they are aiming to help consumers make ends meet and support struggling local businesses.

The systems generally work like this: Businesses and individuals form a network to print currency. Shoppers buy it at a discount — say, 95 cents for $1 value — and spend the full value at stores that accept the currency.

Workers with dwindling wages are paying for groceries, yoga classes and fuel with Detroit Cheers, Ithaca Hours in New York, Plenty in North Carolina or BerkShares in Massachusetts.

Default B.J. Lawson on Fox Business to discuss his work promoting a local currency.

B.J. Lawson on Fox Business Today

Posted by Andrew Ward on 04/10/09

B.J. Lawson, the former candidate for Congress in North Carolina, was on Fox Business around 2:20pm EST this afternoon to discuss his work promoting a local currency.

This should be an interesting interview to watch. We hope you tune in and let us know what you think about his ideas.

For more information on our particular take on currencies, please visit Campaign for Liberty's Sound Money page. Also, be sure to read Anthony Gregory's take on the recent news of local currencies.

Here's my dimb question for the day.

Are there any pointers/guidlines on how to get this going in our own communitys? This is so important, it would be good to follow it up with physical action, the question is how? Anybody out there with some positive input I welcome it even if yyou PM me.

Thanks

Sure there is loads of help out there. And I'm going to post it here because others need to know. However, this information is already been mentioned on the forum so let me give those references first.
http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/s...ht=ithaca+hour
and
http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/s...ht=ithaca+hour
In this second link the info is about three fourths the way down in the post.

The next step is to go to the Ithaca Hour site at;
http://www.ithacahours.com
and
http://www.ithacahours.org
and they have tons of resources that help you get one started in your area. You will want to call them and chat there is so much they know that will probably never be put in print.

Another scrip that has been successful in the Berkshire region of the northeast is located at this site........http://www.berkshares.org

I would love to see our forum support it's own scrip so that we could trade goods and services among each other. In my opinion that is what our forum and our ground crews are all about, being able to support each other through sustainable community trade. In fact I just sent a pm to a moderator discussing how we can do some promoting on the forum....

But should you need more help feel free to send me a pm.

Default North Carolina Town Prints Own Currency to Support Local Business

North Carolina Town Prints Own Currency to Support Local Business

April 9, 2009

We take a look at how one North Carolina town is trying to become more self-sufficient by moving toward being able to feed, fuel and finance itself. The town of Pittsboro houses the nation’s largest biodiesel cooperative, a food co-op, a farmers’ market and, most recently, its own currency, the Pittsboro Plenty. Pittsboro is one of a number of communities across the country printing their own money in an attempt to support local business. [includes rush transcript]

Not sure if my DSL is too slow right now, but the video isn't playing.

Default Local Currency - A Real Stimulus Plan

Local Currency - A Real Stimulus Plan

By Jake Towne
Published 05/04/09

Quote:
The following will lay out a proposed local currency idea to stimulate local economies. This idea is not original and closely follows the successful BerkShares program led by Susan Witt of western Massachusetts and Piedmont PLENTY's, a currency BJ Lawson (aka Ron Paul, Jr.) is helping to start up in North Carolina. The first section will describe how it works, and the second part will list its economic benefits and costs. The third section will list details and my thoughts on the support necessary to start a currency. The fourth section will list several ideas for neighborhood currencies and a small business stimulus plan, and the fifth section is a source list.

LIBERTY DOLLAR ALERT:

June 2009 Vol. 11 No. 06-A
Urgent News for All Liberty Dollar Supporters!

FBI Arrests Bernard, Kevin, Sarah & Rachelle
The battle for a value based currency has begun!

The last two days have been amazing! Just shortly after midnight on Tuesday, the phone started ringing and I let the answering machine take the call. But very soon there was another call… with an even more urgent message! Very quickly, a friend of Kevin Innes, explained to me that Kevin had been "detained" by the local sheriff and was being held for the FBI to arrest him! Holy Cow!! The #2 supporter for the Liberty Dollar and co-instructor at the Liberty Dollar University training sessions was in deep trouble with the Feds! I was sure to be next. But would they arrive in a few minutes or would it be a pre-dawn Nazi style assault?

Finally, I got up at 4:00 AM. I was very concerned for Kevin and wondered when the FBI would hit me. Fortunately the morning was quickly filled with a flurry of calls from Kevin's friend, other interested parties, the usual business calls and making preparations for the inevitable knock on the door. But nobody came. Then just after noon, Niles, who's wife, Rachelle, manages the Liberty Dollar Fulfillment Office, called to tell me that Rachelle had been picked up by the FBI at the LD Office and was due to be arraigned in just a few hours! The FBI strikes again!

Asheville man charged in alleged Liberty Dollar fraud scheme

BY CLARKE MORRISON • JUNE 5, 2009 04:57 PM

ASHEVILLE — Federal authorities arrested an Asheville man in what they said was a scheme to undermine the U.S. currency system and defraud consumers with so-called Liberty Dollars.

William Kevin Innes marketed the “barter” currency in Western North Carolina and recruited merchants willing to accept it and give it as change for products bought with real money, according to an indictment unsealed this week.

Innes, 53, faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted. He was indicted along with Bernard von NotHaus, president of the National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve and Internal Revenue Codes, and two other defendants from Indiana associated with the corporation.

Innes made an initial appearance before a federal magistrate judge in Asheville Wednesday and was ordered detained pending a detention hearing set for Monday before a judge in Charlotte, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
