Consider the Spectrum of light frequencies. Violet/Blue is the highest frequency in the visible spectrum. Higher frequencies move up into the Ultra-Violet and beyond (all the way up through X-Rays, Gamma-Rays &c). Higher frequencies are Shorter in Wavelength, so more Energy per unit of time.

At the lowest end of frequency in the visible spectrum is Red, longer wavelength. Below visible Red is Infrared, and increasingly lower and lower frequencies dropping down into Radio-bands, &c, down into Audible ranges, &c. The Frequencies in the Infrared also correspond to levels of HEAT, so Infrared picks up the Heat signatures better than visual frequencies. The 'best' Infrared detectors are COLD, even super-cooled with liquid Helium. But I wouldn't advise messing around with Liquid Helium, or detectors which require it.

Also, to add here, Most advanced-technology Interstellar Space-Craft have 'Cloaking Fields' specifically to avoid visible observation. Such Cloaking Fields do not seem to be calibrated to preclude the Infrared.
