Or maybe, a few years ago, one of a gang of tomb robbers was wearing it and they were all caught in a sudden deluge and were washed away leaving the watch/ring as the only evidence thay had ever been there.

Another suspicious point is that there is a convention in the "photography-for-advertisement" field, where watches and clocks are photographed with the hands set at roughly 10 to 2, or 10 past 10 to give the photo a balanced look.
