Hi Myplanet2,
What drives people forward is the `unknown`. I left the UK years ago to find something new, to find and discover something different.
The people who run from danger are moving backwards, in retreat. Those people are waiting for the situation to be unsupportable before they move to somewhere else to another supportable situation.
So answering your question, the conditions in pre Columbus Europe are not important in the case of people hopping on a ship looking for the unknown. It`s the same as why do we try and discover more about space? Is the Earth in such a bad state that we need to escape, or do we want to be adventurous to find out more about what we don`t know?
Best regards,
Steve

What were conditions like in Europe pre Columbus, to persuade people to hop into ships and head off for the unknown? To risk certain hardships and unknown dangers?
The illusion of normalcy must have quite a lulling effect.
