Default Re: What's up with Tom?

He's actually playing one of the few good guys in the Nazi regime. Project Valkyrie was a plot conceived by several high-ranking German officers to assassinate Hitler, take over the government, expose corruption, prosecute several of the remaining leaders, and end the war. They strongly disagreed with the way their country was going, particularly (if I remember correctly) the "final solution" to the "Jewish problem".

The plan called for a bomb to be placed in a briefcase under the war planning conference table close enough to Hitler to kill him and perhaps a few of the more heinous criminals in his cabinet while leaving themselves and others relatively unharmed. When the time came, the briefcase was placed under the table at Hitler's end of the table on the inside (toward the middle of the table) of the thick table support. The thought was that when it went off, it would shatter the table support and cause loads of splinters and larger wood shrapnel to kill Hitler. Unfortunately for the plotters, the table support was too strong and thick, and rather than killing Hitler, it only injured him.

Hitler's injuries were fairly severe and included permanent hearing loss and heavy nerve damage to his arm which resulted in his arm being practically useless for the rest of his life. It also shocked and angered him that members of his "trusted" advisory council had managed to carry out the plot at all, and it made him even more paranoid and distrustful than he already was.

In the end, all of the plotters were rooted out and killed in rather unpleasant and painful ways, and no other (known) attempts were made on Hitler's life.
