Aloha, On our island of Kauai, the community college has started a adult-ed basic course in gardening. I just started it a few weeks ago and it is interesting and holds great promise. The instructors are envisioning us as "seeds" in a movement to establish community gardens on the island, as well as our own. The whole goal, of course, is to make us self sufficient agriculturally in the face of rising import/oil costs. I do believe the timing is right for this since it takes a real long time to develop gardening savvy, as well as prepare the soil (heavy red clay on much of Kauai). I think we need to be starting this now, which is what I'm doing on my property with a backyard garden. I was astonished to learn that in 1941, supposedly 60% of veggies were produced in home "victory" gardens. Amazing what we could do, when are minds are set!
