you're supposed to ask three times if you can join, but you can also be invited. i agree with what exchanger wrote above, most masons aren't 'in on it' untill they get to a very, very high level, and have the right 'attitude', so to speak. i know several low level masons, and they are great, hardworking people who help the community.
