I know what story you are referring to and I used to have it saved as a Favourite but when I got a new Computer I lost it as I didn't save all my prior information.

This guy went to the desert on a weekly basis to meet his Alien friend and learned more on each visit and eventually went on their ships and met others and even went to some convention of some sort.

I remember something about getting a Cat as a gift.

I remember something about a mountain that was not really there, it was some kind of hologram to hide this spot in the desert.

I tried googling key words for you but was unsuccessful in tracking it down. I can not remember what site I linked to the story from.... now you have me frustrated to re-find it! LOL
