I have to admit that some of us have more "good" in our hearts than others. But to have faith in mankind as the essay talks about is like having faith in a snake to build a bird's nest. We had 6,000 years to build a society with flying cars, unlimited low-cost healthcare, total peace, love in every facet of society, and a place where no one goes to bed hungry at night....a utopia as you call it. All we've done is made it MUCH worse! We don't know what we're doing, and having this faith in mankind is wishful thinking and an unfulfilled dream. There are no one in this world who are faithfully and totally "good." We all have evil in our hearts. And therefore will always have a corrupted, evil world. ONLY one is good. And that is Yahweh Elohim (God Almighty). People, we need Yahweh's help. Admit it. Stop being prideful and depend on yourselves. Stop being like a snake and try to build a bird's nest, which you will never succeed.
