Dont forget that there are some bad people out there that wouldn't care whether if live or die as long as they get food. These people will take the easy option everytime.
Some people have children that they want to protect and help survive so self protection is a good thing to have.
Making your house a safe place is better than being thrown out on the streets with nothing.
Then at least you have a base from which you can feed your family and work with others from.
But this isn't going to happen anyway
