A faraday cage is complete if the sheilding material is solid. If you use a mesh, it will only filter frequencies that are longer than the "holes" in the mesh. That's is why Microwave oven doors all look the same with those little holes, the little holes are just shorter than the wavelength of the RF used to cook your food.

So: the question then becomes, what are the frequencies found in your average EMP etc.
