Certainly more odd cloud formations have been reported in recent years because more people are looking up to the heavens due to the feeling of doom and gloom that is being generated by the publicity given to "the end of the world in 2012" scenario. Couple that with the biblical prophecies in the Book of Revelations, and you have people tripping over their own feet with their heads back searching for "signs in the sky."
I know, been there done that and I've got the scars to prove it.
