I have no thoughts about Ms Goodchild but I get the code.

It's where a=1, b=2 and so on. When you get to a letter that is in double figures you add them together to get a single digit. So, for example, S is the 19th letter of the alphabet, but 1+9= 10, which in turn becomes 1+0 =1

So Alabama would be 1 (A), 3 (L =12, but 1+2=3) 1 (A), 2 (B), 1 (A),
4 (M = 13, (1+3=4), 1(A)
