I view the sybolism as representative of the Kundalini Energy that connects our consiousness to higher realms of existance.

The reason why it has been portrayed by some religions as evil is because those particular religion had an alterior motive to scare people away from intuitive knowledge. I have Hatian immigrants on my staff and they are all scared of snakes because they have been tought by the Voodo priets on thier island that the serpent is a representation of evil magik. The negative sect of the Voodoo religion obviously inserted this disinformation as part of thier control structure.
