I do puters for a living. A lot of these problems are with your pc, your connection, or this site is over loaded.

Yes you should have a firewall but that will not keep the viruses out. Not to mention most of you would not configure it properly. No offense. Please note that if you use a wireless firewall router you will still need to firewall your computer.

Get an antivirus/antispyware package. I use AVG free edition. It is very good. Use a less popular web browser like FireFox, Chrome, or Opera. Most exploits are geared toward Internet Explorer. I like firefox since it has alot of free addons.

As stated earlier, a different OS is a very strong help. Ubutu linux is not that hard or OS X(but you will need a mac).

Most of the time these problems are not viruses nor spyware. It could be bad programming or failing hardware.
