Sunspots develop and persist for periods ranging from hours to months, and are carried around the surface of the Sun by its rotasjon. An average solar cycle ranges from 75 to 155 sunspots. Cycle 24 sunspot 1005 remains quiet and is no threat for solar flares. It is the biggest spot of the new cycle thus far.
Solar activity waxes and wanes in 11-year cycles. Lately, we've been experiencing the low ebb, very few flares, sunspots, or activity of any kind. The peak of the next sunspot cycle is expected in late 2011 or mid-2012 — potentially affecting airline flights, communications satellites and electrical transmissions.
