While I agree whole heartedly with that view, I would just like to point out that the word "church" has three meanings: it is a building - it is a group of people meeting for religious purposes - it is the hierarchy of a religious order.
I believe that it is in the last of these meanings where the corruption can be found. The sheep in the flock, (the second meaning) can't be blamed for the sins of the shepherd.
