Another interesting data point on this is that unless I'm mistaken, Iceland is where Bill Gates and Rockefeller foundations built the big post apocalyptic seed vault.

Maybe they don't want any problems with pesky things like asserted national sovereignty?

Run the country into the ground, and pull any loans they desperately need, and problem solved.
