I live in Spain and the thing that was strange about the madrid bombing was that it was 2 days before the spanish elections. It seemed to me that the ruling party at the time (Conservative) would get in again without a problem. But the bombs went off in the trains and the opposition got in instead. Due in large part to confused press reports at first saying it was ETA that was responsible, then a day later Al Keda. The pubilc seemed to go mad at this confusion from the ruling party and as a result opposition pledged a removal of forces from Iraq and got in at the last min.
I cannot see the why one party would have been prefered over another as both are pretty incompetent, all very strange...
