The way I see it is that a total collapse of the banking system would render your money worthless whether its in the bank or out of it. Or half and half. You'd be walking around with bits of paper that you can't actually do anything with. You try and buy something off somebody, they'll not accept your cash if they can't spend it, and so on and so on....
