Another area of the brain, probably worthy of its own thread, is the amygdala. I wrote about it on my website. The amygdala is the seat of the limbic system. If you touch the bridge of your nose between the eyebrows and imagine a spot inward about an inch and a half, that's where it is. It is possible for an open circuit to exist between the frontal lobes and the limbic system - gives rise to visions and startling perceptions. I can only imagine what would occur if the pineal was brought in - in fact, the entire brain working together in a controlled way would be an amazing thing.
