You only have to look at History. Millions die in wars because they thought they were following a political Saviour who was a megalomaniac.
Hitler, Napoleon, but to name two. It was hero worship. They replaced God with a dictator. The Saviour of the human race is the Creator of the Human race and is to be found inside, not in a UFO.
