Hey Lear,
I try to hold the viewer's eye by giving it something to look at, until the mind kicks in, forms thoughts, and derives meaning. As a painter, I'm constantly divided about how much of the underlying idea of a painting needs to be explained to the viewer for the viewer to "get it". In the end though, the art always gets filtered through the viewer's consciousness, and "positive", "negative", "bad", "good", "serious or not" (in short, "meaning") is always the province of the viewer's mind. Art like beauty is subjective.
I'm not sure whether or not the following quote from my "Mindsnapper" series (see "Burning Monk" early up in the thread) will shed some light on the thoughts behind my work, but I'd like to share it with you:
"Mindsnapper Series is a group of paintings comprising a broad range of influences. The overarching theme is that human consciousness is both a progenitor and a product of local and global events; and that this "internal" and "external" force, respectively, are distinct vital systems of a single, universal organism. Mindsnapper reaches toward the prospect of an emerging civilization-mode rooted in this "universal" perception-- one largely powered by light-based energy. Here the concept of "illumination" is approached, both from a consciousness and a materials perspective. "
