One of the guidebooks of disinformation I was reading a while ago, I recall it said one of the best techniques of disinfo is: "the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it, the better"
I can think of many in the alternative/ufos/conspiracy community who've fed us such lies, but I'd be hesitant to name names because of course, for one you can never be 100% sure and couldn't prove it conclusively either, the other reason is some of those characters have a large following, and therefore would be treading on sensitive ground.
Most of the time we're really just dealing with sensationalism and people trying to make a buck out of this business, not an actual paid-disinfo-job.
Its a shame how some people will sell the truth as if it were something you could put a price tag on, or a ticket to hollywood style entertainment. Those are the ones you need to watch out for, because they have more influence and possibly contaminate the field more than any disinformation artist could ever hope for.
