But there are mental illnesses - e.g. depression, schizophrenia, etc. Around 1% of the population has clinically significant symptoms. These are real and do exist, however, the DSM4 has thousands of illnesses that almost everyone would fit into the criteria of at least one illness. So if everyone is ill, there can be NO illness, as the definition of illness is "not the norm" (ie, most people don't have it).
