The situation reminds me of the Jews going into the gas chambers - they weren't told they were going to die, but were tricked into it.

Tricked? I think that most Jews already knew the Nazi's were bad news on the morning after the 'Kristalnacht' took place in 1936. By the time they arrived in the concentation camps they probably had some idea of what was going on & what might happen to them. It was the sheer method of extermination, that might have caught them by surprise.
We are presuming that we're dealing with cool, trustworthy aliens, who thought: 'What the f#ck, let's make this Earthling's day & offer him a ride!'
"Wanna smoke? Sure, no problem! Perhaps a drink to go with it? Tequila? What brand? Sauza? Sauza what, silver, gold..? Hey, take it or leave it, Earthling! Make up your mind, we haven't got all day! Yes, you may send a message to a loved one to tell them not to worry, but keep it short!"
These are 'make yourself at home' EBE's. Handsome too. Tall blondes, but not so tall you have to look up to them.
I mean, just the chance to travel at the speed of light in this lifetime is enough reason (for me, that is) to aboard their craft.
