hmmm...the eXpression
we think you are thinking of, is this one
Does NOT know know **** from Shinola
which means,
one who possess poor knowledge,
and, lacks good skills of judgment
Shinola was actually, a brand of shoe polish
at one time, manufactured in the USA,
the marketing, was aimed a dim wits
that old 'ola' suffix
ended up, on a lot of things
cola, crayola, granola, etc.,
the phrase likely came out of the war,
the second world war,
where it orginiated.
Other "does NOT know" phrases,
were quite popular in the war:
"he does NOT know enough to pee down wind"
"he does NOT know his ass from a hole in the ground"
"he does NOT know whether to scratch his balls, or wind his ass"
or, was that one
"he does NOT know whether to scratch is watch, or wind his ass"
was it NOT Sir Henry Wood who eXpressed
a similar comment/and, opinion when he would say:
"he does NOT know his brass from his wood wind".
lots of good sayings, for sure
