Health Care Fight Not Over

Posted by Matt Hawes on 12/21/09 9:12 PM

No matter what the media is reporting, the battle to save what little remains of free market health care (and to eventually drive the government entirely out of it) is still not over.

First, a couple of procedural votes remain in the Senate that require 60 votes to pass. The first of these could come as soon as tomorrow morning.

Secondly, even if the Reid bill passes, Senate Republicans can filibuster the selection of conferees to the House/Senate conference to settle bill differences.

Third, there is a very big chance that the committee will have a hard road in front of it trying to come up with a bill that makes moderates happy. Almost all of the huge issues remain on the table, including abortion and the public option.

Nothing is guaranteed, but Congress needs to hear from you, especially Senators Nelson and Sanders, as well as anyone else who cut a deal in order to get privileged treatment from the feds.

The bottom line is: the vast majority of these elected officials want to return to office, and, no matter how often it doesn't seem to be the case, your voice, if raised loud and often enough, can still keep them from doing the wrong thing.

Dedicated activists on the right, the left, and everywhere in between oppose the Reid bill, and, as strange as it may sound, vocal workers who have been on both sides of this debate for the last several months are now in pursuit of the same thing: defeating this legislation. We can fight again over the public option in the future, but let's join together to stop what we can while we still can.

There are also some rumors that Senator McConnell is considering throwing in the towel and heading home. Call the Senate Minority Leader and remind him to do his job.

Call, email, and fax often. The most nefarious legislation can pass while people are distracted by the holidays (Federal Reserve Act anyone?). We have a very real chance to shut this government takeover down and push for true reform.
