OLD VOWS MADE NEW
Just down the lane an old walnut grew,
All boles and knots and now branches few,
It's an old, old tree with many tales to tell,
But at it's base a living tale does dwell.
In a bole is a hole, spanned by a windowed green door,
Another hole a window, from which a warm, gold glow does pour,
Up to the window, now quietly sneak,
Into the yellow, slowly take a peek,
Careful now don't even make a squeak,
As the gold enfolds you, your eyes start to tear,
A full toothed smile spreads ear to ear.
Inside the glow is a room, all purple and green,
Two wooden chairs and wooden table between,
In the center a bowl with two berries and a large green bean,
On either side two candles pouring forth their bright sheen.
Careful now, listen to what you hear,
Two sets of footsteps softly pad,
Two gentle old figures out of the shadows appear,
Two furry hamsters, cheerfully clad.
There's Pemberton, green trousers, a large gold watch and a purple shirt,
And Penny, a green blouse, and pretty purple skirt,
Brown fringe on the skirt circles her knees,
She wears a bright yellow apron all covered in bees.
And a purple bow ribbon in her hair,
They both gently smile as each takes their chair.
Across the table his hand reaches for hers,
"Come dear, step outside before we eat",
She dons a shawl, green slippers and her small clutch purse,
He grabs a jacket, a feathered felt cap and slippers for his feet.
Her hand in his, as they head outside.
Hurry, get away from the window, their coming, quick hide.
As the door opens a warm glow grows,
But from two old hearts filled with love,
A different radiance flows,
Their eyes shine, filled with the moon up above.
In the glow of their door light and the soft spring moon,
We hear crickets and bull frogs croon their favorite tune.
Listen close, they're about to speak;
"Dearest Penny, the years filled my heart with the warmest love for you",
"My darling Penny, for you, my heart has grown in deepening love too",
We watch, two rings seal the bond, Old Vows Made New.
And as we turn and away we sneak,
We haven't been caught, but rightly we miss,
An old bond of love sealed with a kiss.
