To me its obvious they can. Activities of this nature will always provide a path for them so long as the necessary karmic conditions are in place that allow them to do so. (IE: you have perhaps bought deceit on yourself by being deceitful, etc etc)
Purity, protection, love, calmness, clarity, positivity, guidance etc are the defensive tools
