I'm not sure what type of Missile it was, nor do I know much about missiles, but I do no that many will detinate on impact only, there is a tit for lack of a better word, on the end of the missile, that once depressed, will cause the boom.
If you are talking about that photo when you mention dense, it is because as mentioned, it was taken using a slow shutter speed meaning that the camera stays open and records everything that happens over a set amount of time and outputs it in one frame. This is why it is more dense in the center then on the outside.
