This is why I often refer to Archangel Michael, and don't always mention Archangels Uriel, Gabriel, Zadkiel, Jophiel, Chammuel, Raphael, Uzziel. Because it is very very tough for impersonators to get away with impersonating archangel Michael.
All Archangels and equally amazingly good, they have their own specialties and eventually I believe humanity will learn, important to work with to keep the world healthy happy and protected.
However, like you say, there historically have been false spirits.
My personal belief is every bit of spiritual work that anyone does should be prefaced with:
"All within God's Will". This will help with getting the real deal.
Now the reason I so often recommend Archangel Michael, is because his whole job is protection and it's not so easy for impersonators to start impersonating him and come when you call his name. He's not exaclty a wimp, he's as cosmic as any Being that is working with earth at this time. So the point is, call to Archangel Michael, and you will feel his presence if you listen, ask that it is within God's Will. Then discern for yourself whether the presence you feel is benevolent.
