I read a number of Paramahansa Yogananda's books. I understood he gave a farewell party before he left, and did not die in the usual way, as he willed his spirit to leave the body (while in meditation). I believe it was in his Autobiography of a Yogi (post script written by one of his disciples, I believe).

Death and Birth are 2 sides of the same coin. It is transformation. Death and birth happen at the same time. What we call birth is "dying" on the other side; what we call death is "birthing" on the other side.
