In one of his Camelot interviews (sorry, can't recall which one it was), Burisch stated that his superiors manipulated/altered a lot of his information, including his educational history. According to him, they did this as a form of punishment for sharing his knowledge with the public, and also as a way to discredit him. I'm not sure if the bankruptcy was one of those things, or not. But, even if Burisch did file for bankruptcy, I'm not sure why that would make you doubt the credibility of his information.
But, like you, I struggle with the fact that Burisch claims he was later "ordered" to disclose this information to the public. I have yet to wrap my mind around that one...
