Maypole is a May Day (May 1) kind of celebration - kind of group weaving. I guess it would be a good way to subvert happy dancing, with all its happy pagan maiden, children, community, phallic, fertility symbolism.
May Day (May 1) is also:
- International Workers' Day, so it would be a good way to subvert feelings of empowerment
- May Day is also an emergency call, so it would be a good way to exploit pre-existing distress responses

As for May 22, it's a day after Ascension and around the time of New Moon (dark knights/nights). May 25 is Memorial Day, so people are already appropriately aggrieved if/when people die. May 28 is Chinese Dragon Boat Festival - it would dampen that cultural event. Late spring would be a perfect time to depress everyone in the northern hemisphere with a nuke attack.
