I think many good animal handlers have this communication ability, without being able to voice it. Its a 'knowing'. Since having another house cow this season I have realized what close friendships cows have with each other. We had a very old cow from the dairy herd that I put in with my housecow. There was two of them actually, but one of them my cow approached and proceeded to lick her, all over her face! It was like a cow face massage. I was fascinated. They obviously knew each other from their time in the large dairy herd.
