is anyone else out there experiencing problems with staying logged into the forum?

i have been...disconnected from the forum 5 times in the last hour...

My intenet connection is fine


it just happened again..i get inexplicably disconnected fromt he forum and need to re log in..

it happens while i am being active on the site...

The forum uses cookies in your browser ... make sure cookies are enabled.

It could be one of many reasons ...

I believe we are getting logged out sooner than we did before if we are idle.

It's a security and bandwidth feature.

Example before I could sit idle for 30 minutes and still be logged in

Now it may be set to 10 minutes due to all the new members...

Just guessing

Connection is OK for me, but I was logged out at my first reply to a post by Anchor. (I was on for about 5 min.)

When I checked about 10 minutes ago.

Yep, I was just bumped out of the site....getting a net message that said Network Timeout ....this has happened 3 times with 8mins. Back on again.

I am wondering what is going on on the internet ...

I am web developer and I work on various sites and various servers around the world. Since a couple of months now mysteriously
'Server 500 errors' appeared. At first I thought it was related to a certain server but I noticed this error on several servers
on different locations.
I had several suspicions now on my Firefox, my ADSL connection, my firewall etc. but there is no commonality concentrating
on one point.

I noticed that this problems exists in general ... what seems to happen is that on lower layer levels packets go lost and
although internet protocols should manage that it seems not to function.
I also noticed these kind of problems with email now etc.

Are they messing with the internet ? Is this related to Internet 2.0 ? Who knows ....

Hi Céline,

Don't be sad :wub2: ... I realize it's a bit technical ... the reason I posted was to see if other people have the same experience too.

Translated in 'normal' language: all internet traffic (email, browsing on the www etc.) is chopped into portions (packets) and routed
between source and destination. Normally the internet protocol takes care that all portions are glued together in the right order.
But the latter seems to be a growing problem lately.

This will lead to the fact that sometimes with 'half' arrived traffic ... browsers are stuck with forever loading signs,
Skype calls dropping off, email is not consistently arriving or not reported as having arrived etc.

Since I noticed this behavior under different conditions I was wondering how global this problem really is.

Sorry for confusing you but glad to say we're still in the physical world where we can appreciate the beautiful flowers ...

my household (3 computers on a network) has been having trouble for a couple of months. certain websites are more an issue than others, with this one being the most difficult for me. some days worse than others. at the same time, there are some websites i never have a problem connecting to.

i've laboriously searched for virus/spyware/etc problems and have come up empty handed. email seems to be fine. it just seems that certain websites are problematic. it also seems that the websites most effected have certain thematic elements in common, :winksmiley02: which makes my conspiracy theory mind wonder what's up......

That there would be special interest in messing with this site comes as no surprise. Given the specs of Internet 2.0
it will become easier for them. Although the reason given is 'higher reliability' the real reason is exactly this ...
In the new lower layers is specified where the packet is coming from and where it is going to.
So it should increase reliability when routing the packet. But instead of course it is about more control.
Not only can they track even better WHO is spreading WHAT but also they can mess with traffic in a convenient way.
You can let specific packets get lost so you annoy people and they quit visiting the targeted website(s).
You can do this on critical interconnecting points to disrupt source or destination areas. So what everyone experiences
can be totally different depending on your location.

Well that sounds exactly like my investigations. The only common factor here is that there is actually only one ISP on
the island and I unfortunately cannot rule them out for screwing up :sneaky2:

That you have more problems with certain websites can be related to your location (distance/path) with respect to the location
where the server for that specific website resides.

For Firefox users there is a little bit more help: there is an add-on 'clear cache button' that you can place on top.
When you have problems loading a page then press stop, clear cache and retry. Sometimes hitting enter while in the
address bar works better than pressing the reload button.

The only time I have ever had to re-log in was when Avalon reboots the forum server, or it goes down.

Might I suggest you pick up something fairly heavy, and not too expensive, then chuck it at your dear husband's head. Then in your best shrill voice suggest something like...

"Fix this!!! N O W ! ! "

In all seriousness, I am not sure why some folk keep getting logged out, except... when you do log in, there should be a check-box there that says, "Keep me logged in". If you see it next time, make sure it is checked.

Even then you probably did not need to login ... userid and password are both stored separately in a cookie.
That is what you activate when you mark 'keep me logged in'. That makes it browser dependent not server dependent.

These are the potential reasons why you are not automatically logged in:

- cookies are disabled in your browser
- cookies were deleted when cleaning browser data
- cookies were expired (when I look at the data inside they are valid for one year)
- like you browser missed parts of traffic and keeps loading ... the server missed parts of traffic and was not able to read your cookie
