Breadcrumb Causes CERN's LHC Shut Down

CERN’s LHC Shut Down Again

And again CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is out of order! This time it had to be turned off, because a bird dropped a breadcrumb (I’m NOT making this up!) in the huge collider, causing the LHC to overheat.

CERN said that the LHC will be repaired quickly and should be back in full use, later this month. It was only last week that CERN started up the collider again, after it was shut down in September 2008.

That was lucky. They could have all ended up as toast! (at least the piece of baguette!).

You know TRANCOSO, that this benefic effect for the humanity, is the result of human thought amplified through a small pyramid! :thumb_yello: Thumbs up for that guys, they did it again!

If the project didnt have potential for sending us all into nowhere it would be comical. The series of delays and problems with the LHC are a message. No ones is listening and everyone may pay the price for that.

The spokesperson said the bread, which was "naked and unfilled", had caused a short circuit when dropped on an electrical installation that supplies energy to the massive experiment. While the bird was unconfirmed as the definite culprit, it had been spotted beforehand near the substation carrying bread, said the spokesperson.

The short circuit caused a power failure which affected a quarter of the 27km Large Hadron Collider (LHC) circuit, said the spokesperson. Due to the power cut, Sectors 7-8 and 8-1 had warmed up by three degrees Kelvin (K).

The LHC, which is out of action after a short circuit last September, had been cooled to its operating temperature of 1.9K before the power failure.

The fault had been rectified and the LHC re-cooled to 1.9K, or -271°C, by the end of Thursday, said the spokesperson.

The Large Hadron Collider, which straddles the border of France and Switzerland near Geneva, will become partially operational in the new year. When fully operational, the machine will smash beams of protons into each other in an effort to better understand the fundamental nature of matter, and to search for an elusive scalar elementary particle called the Higgs boson.

Protection systems put in place following a short circuit in September 2008 had reacted to the power cut, said the spokesperson. Had a particle beam been circling the machine, the energy of the beam would have been dumped into graphite blocks encased in concrete. Similarly, an improved quench protection system, installed since last year's short circuit, would have dumped some of the energy stored in the affected sectors of the machine.

Since its first major power-up on 10 September 2008, the LHC has suffered a few setbacks which have halted or slowed its work. In February 2009, physicists Holger B Nielsen and Masao Ninomiya speculated in a paper that accelerators producing large amounts of Higgs particles in the future would in effect halt present attempts to find the particles by permanently scuppering those accelerators, making it impossible to ever detect a Higgs boson.

The Cern spokesperson said on Friday that it was "highly unlikely" a future Higgs boson was foiling present attempts to discover it.

"In my opinion, nature will tell us how nature works," said the spokesperson. "There's no reason to think that the Higgs boson will be easy to find. I have an open opinion, but it's highly unlikely [that Higgs is self-cancelling]."

GaiaLove - I heard about the operative, but not the crack. Do you mean crack like crackhead or crack like fissure?

There's speculation about these series of (whatever they are).

A particle God doesn’t want us to discover
Could the Large Hadron Collider be sabotaging itself from the future, as some physicists say - October 18, 2009
...Is it really nothing more than bad luck or is there something weirder at work? Such speculation generally belongs to the lunatic fringe, but serious scientists have begun to suggest that the frequency of Cern’s accidents and problems is far more than a coincidence.

Re: Breadcrumb Causes CERN's LHC Shut Down

The collider is plagued by thousands of suspect electrical splices that might not be able to handle the currents required for running at higher energies. Last September, only nine days after scientists at CERN and around the world had first succeeded in shooting beams of protons around the ring (but had not yet tried to collide them), a splice between two magnets vaporized in a shower of sparks and soot, damaging dozens of the expensive 35-ton magnets.

The 27-kilometer (16.8 mile) LHC suffered serious overheating in several sections after the small piece of baguette landed in a piece of equipment on the surface above the accelerator ring.
Dr Mike Lamont, the LHC’s Machine Coordinator, said that a “a bit of baguette”, believed to have been dropped by a bird, caused the superconducting magnets to heat up from 1.9 Kelvin (-271.1C) to around 8 Kelvin (-265C), near the mark where they stop superconducting.

October 16 2008 Investigations at CERN following a large helium leak into sector 3-4 of the LHC
tunnel have confirmed that cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection between
two of the accelerator’s magnets. This resulted in mechanical damage and release of helium
from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel.

Re: Breadcrumb Causes CERN's LHC Shut Down

Sounds like something from a Doctor Who episode. The Doctor needs to shut the reactor down but can't because he is being held up. He has a piece of bread and sees a bird in the window. The bird comes in the window as The Doctor temps it with a piece of the bread. He then throws the piece of bread into the hallway, the bird grabs it, flies into the belly of the LHC, starts to eat t, and a crumb then falls into the innerworkings of the LHC, causing it to malfunction. Cue sparks and explosions.

It could be worse.. the bird could have dropped something else... then all we need is someone to leave a fan in the collider and then we could have had a major TSHTF episode... crumbs!

2 respectable physicists maybe?

I believe it was posted in the news section some time ago, an article that stated it was calculated and suggested why the LHC will fail, always, in its quest to discover the "god particle".

Details - re half energy ...

LHC to run at 3.5 TeV for early part of 2009-2010 run rising later
06.08.2009
'The LHC will run at 3.5 TeV per beam until a significant data sample has been collected and the operations team has gained experience in running the machine. Thereafter, with the benefit of that experience, the energy will be taken towards 5 TeV per beam. At the end of 2010, the LHC will be run with lead ions for the first time. After that, the LHC will shut down and work will begin on moving the machine towards 7 TeV per beam.'
http://press.web.cern.ch/press/Press.../PR13.09E.html

The LHC is back
20.11.2009
The LHC reached its operating temperature of 1.9 Kelvin, or about -271 Celsius, on 8 October. Particles were injected on 23 October, but not circulated. A beam was steered through three octants of the machine on 7 November, and circulating beams have now been re-established. The next important milestone will be low-energy collisions, expected in about a week from now.

A press conference will be held at CERN, at the Globe of Science and Innovation, at 2pm on Monday 23 November, and webcast at: http://webcast.cern.ch/. Submit your questions to @CERN via Twitter. We cannot guarantee that all questions will be answered.

"Bech Nielson of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and Masao Ninomiya of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kyoto, Japan have published several papers over the past year arguing that the CERN experiment may be the latest in a series of physics research projects whose purposes are so unacceptable to the universe that they are doomed to fail, subverted by the future."

There are also some great pics of the collider, like a guy on his bike I guess that's how you'd get around the track

Large Hadron Collider 'performing well' - CERN
04/03/2010

A detailed check of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) running at a low energy has showed that it is "performing well," the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) said on its website Thursday.

The world's most powerful atom smasher was restarted Saturday. The first protons were injected into the LHC following a pre-New Year technical shutdown and traveled in both directions successfully.

"The circulating beams marked the end of a 10 week particle-free hiatus for the world's largest particle accelerator, during which LHC scientists and engineers have prepared the machine for its biggest challenge yet, particle collisions at an energy of 7 trillion electron volts (TeV). The beams also mark the beginning of the LHC's first long run, expected to last until at least mid-year 2011," Symmetry magazine said last week.

In 2011, the collider will be shut down again to prepare it for its intended collision energy of 14 TeV.

The $4.9 billion international LHC project has involved more than 2,000 physicists from hundreds of universities and laboratories in 34 countries since 1984. Over 700 Russian physicists from 12 research institutes have taken part.

Experiments using the LHC were suspended in September 2008 shortly after a successful start, due to a malfunction of two superconducting magnets and a subsequent helium leak into the tunnel housing the device.

Work to repair and upgrade the collider after the breakdown cost almost $40 million and took more than a year. A system to protect it from such accidents, named the Quench Protection System, was installed, and the first beams were injected into the LHC on November 20 last year.
