This Connection is Untrusted

Just tried to follow a link to this forum and got this message

Quote:

This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Firefox to connect
securely to projectavalon.net, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely,
sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

What Should I Do?

If you usually connect to
this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is
trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

Technical Details

projectavalon.net uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.

(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

I Understand the Risks

If you understand what's going on, you
can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification.
Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is
tampering with your connection.

Don't add an exception unless
you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification.

I thought sod it and clicked

Re: This Connection is Untrusted

unless it was a link to sign up and pay, I don't think it should have happened.

One possible reason might be that the link you clicked to get here has an extra letter in it. the difference is bettwen a link starting with HTTP vs. HTTPS.

The S on the end means a secure encrypted connection. they wouldn't have such a thing on the regular forum server, so naturally you'd get that warning.

I just tried adding an S in the right place for the link to this thread, and got the same warning.

Might go back to where you saw the link, and see if it starts with HTTPS. The S is unnecessary, but will trigger the alarm.

Swanny;

Lemme take a wild guess.....

The link you clicked on came from a Google Advanced Search results page. ;)

Did it? huh? huh? did it?

I bring it up because right after my last post I went there and did just such an advanced search on another subject. About 1/2 the links begin with HTTPS rather than HTTP.

So if that's where the link came from, it's Google's error not yours, or Camelots.

Re: This Connection is Untrusted

That is true, projectavalon.net does use a self-signed certificate.

There is nothing wrong with this, it just means that we didnt pay a huge fee for the charade of being certified by some faceless corporation :)

Of course, this will only happen when you use https: instead of http:.

The need to use the secure link depends on your circumstances.

A..

Anchor;

Self-certifying is so satisfying, ain't it?

Paying Network Solutions, et al they're silly blood money for an entry in a database... Gads whatta racket!

I just ran across it yesterday when searching for other things.

Quote:

Post ssl security
SSL Self signed certificate has been installed, so you may now use
https://projectavalon.net/forum
If your browser complains, you can download and import this ssl certificate
into your cert store, your just confirm the exception if your a firefox users.
http://projectavalon.net/projectavalon.net.crt

Even tho the browser may complain its not trusted, it will be once
you import it into your cert store, browsers complain about this if
the certificate is not signed by one of the major 3rd party vendors, like comodo,
thawte etc....
Communications are still encrypted and are therefore secure.
