This is really something great, a similar activity, that they did in the “Foundation”-series, written by Isac Asimov, a favourite of mine. from early age. :original: :thumb_yello:

I have some questions and I am aware that it is a beta testing:

1. Is this “read only” for everybody, except for Researchers?

2. Is it possible for a ordinary Member, to contribute?
For example: Is it a good idea to discuss a topic in an ordinary thread?
And after that put together a PDF-file, and then contact you Researchers?

3. I have a technical problem. I am running Ubuntu Linux 7.10 (Debian-based and updated automatically). :nono: :lmfao:
To show the PDF-files, I'm using “Evince 2.20.1”.
Some of the documents in the Library will issue the following Error code: “Failed to load document from data (error 2)'”.
Maybe, something strange with the DOC- and the PDF- format, just speculations?

much of the information is already in the open forum. What we need is just the facts with all of the commentary removed. As you can see it is a challenge
to sift through the forum to find a specific piece of information. The goal
of the library is the right information when you need it at your fingertips.
For this reason we keep tight control over what is added. If you have information you would like to submit for inclusion in the library let me know.
I will arrange for you to be able to upload information, pending approval by
the editors.

Hello everyone, I just want to remind folks that the researchers worked really, really hard getting the library data together so folks can start downloading ASAP. We've no idea how much time before something happens where the net may go down, so this is a nice time to get that info stored onto your hard drive, discs or flash drive.

I also want to personally thank Don, Fritz, Joy, Tez, Miki, Henry and the many other researchers who assisted in this daunting endeavor for all of thier outstanding hard work. They have been working almost non-stop throughout all of December and up to now putting in hundreds of hours into gathering this data, organizing it and preparing it to be downloaded. What they did will save lives but only if you, the member, take the time to access and download what they put together for you.

Awesome job folks. :thumb_yello:

Big thanks to all the researchers and everyone involved in bringing this library to us.

Something kinda wierd happened when I followed Baggy's original link though.

The avatar and screenname were not mine. It said "hi blastawaycas" the first time I went there. When i moved on to the "sections" link, the screen switched and my name and avatar were displayed, but I suppose if I could have looked through pms under that name while i was pseudo logged in as that member.

Just mentioning this because I know it's a beta version and still evolving I guess.

Thanks for the heads up, raulduke, and thanks to everyone who has browsed around the library. It's still very much in the beginning stages, with much more to come than is already there. So check in often.

Since none of us librarians are programmers, any remaining little bugs will have to wait until we get some tech help on the researcher team.

And we very much appreciate your feed back on the library.

Some feedback:
Uploaded only about 20 books so far.. much more will come as I get more time.
Only problem I have had is that whenever I upload a book of substantial size ie: greater than 5mb, either the entire screen turns completely white with no response towards the completion of the upload OR I get various error messages.

Shame as I have many valuable books to upload that are of a larger size.

Apart from that everything is running smoothly. Thanks for the great resource.

The upload/download module seems to have a bug. Or else there is a setting that is causing larger uploads/downloads to time out.

I am researching this issue.

Gareth has just installed FTP capability for the library. This will be used for large (er) files. But it won't
do any good if we cannot solve the download issue.

If you have issues uploading downloading or viewing a file in the library, I want to know about it.

Gareth did some tinkering under the hood and we need to know if it worked..

First, thank you a bunch for this work.
I tried downloading the ''complete idiots guide to sign language' about 10 times with Mozilla Firefox. It stopped as complete at various Mb: 1, 5 twice, 6,7,8, and 9.6.

Hi, and greetings from the N. Georgia (USA) mountains. Any advice on using my flash drive to store the library info in case the net goes down? Would I have to pick and choose and download individual docs, or can I store the whole thing? Many thanks ... and my apologies for what is probably a very stupid question.

Hi LindaBaker.

There is a way to bulk download, but it was installed as a researcher tool, to facilitate uploading and downloading content.

I'll have to check with the admin, and see if it is available for members' use, as it provides the means for users to delete content.

The risk of accidental deletion of library content would be a big concern, and would have to be ruled out before unlimited access can be given, via FTP.

I'll let you know if I find out anymore about this.

In the meantime, you can download anything you'd like via the normal user interface.

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not the library.

I just went to upload a book for everyone and I couldn't access the library.
I got this error message:

I announced that we knew about this problem a little while back.

I am working on it when I can. Unfortunately due to the access required I can only do it from home in the evenings.

After a little delay I now know what the problem is, but I need to be very careful because I dont want to make it worse.

I expect some progress in the next few days - the best chance for me is the weekend.

Sorry, even though I want to do this faster, I can't.

At least it is the only remaining problem, all the other ones got fixed now :)
